September is Hunger Action Month: Making a Difference Together

By Rachel Lord, Policy and Advocacy Director, AFPC

It’s September in Alaska - a time for fall colors, termination dust, berries, mushrooms, and hunting. It’s also Hunger Action Month—a time dedicated to understanding the challenges of hunger and taking action to help those in need. Hunger affects millions of people across the country, and Alaska is no exception. By working together, we can play a vital role in ensuring that all Alaskans have access to enough food.

What Is Hunger Action Month?

Hunger Action Month, started in 2008 by Feeding America, is a national effort to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger in our communities. Across Alaska, many of our neighbors face food insecurity, which means they aren’t always sure where their next meal will come from. This month is an opportunity for us to come together, learn more, and take action to make a positive impact.

The Hunger Museum

Inspiration at MAZON and the Virtual Hunger Museum

One of AFPC’s key advocacy partners, and an inspirational organization that has been a strong leader in the fight against hunger is MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger. MAZON is a national nonprofit working to end hunger both in the United States and around the world. They have developed an innovative resource called The Hunger Museum - a fantastic virtual space. This online platform offers valuable insights into the history and current state of hunger in America. It includes stories from individuals who have experienced hunger and highlights the efforts of those working to combat it. The virtual Hunger Museum is an excellent tool for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of hunger and become more informed on the issue.

Alaska’s Response: Food Bank of Alaska and Local Pantries

In Alaska, the Food Bank of Alaska plays a crucial role in addressing hunger. Their staff and partners work tirelessly to collect and distribute food across the state. Alongside partners like AFPC and the Alaska Farm Bureau, we also work together to advocate for policy changes to stop hunger in Alaska.

The Food Bank of Alaska collaborates with numerous local food banks and pantries, which serve as vital resources in their communities. These local partners are on the front lines, ensuring that food reaches those who need it most. Check out their Hunger Action Month activities and information on how you can get involved!

How You Can Help

You can contribute to the fight against hunger in Alaska in many ways. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Donate: Direct financial donations are critical for supporting the Food Banks and Food Pantries across Alaska! You can also donate food - consider purchasing extra non-perishable food items, such as canned vegetables or pasta, during your next grocery trip. These items can be donated to local food pantries or included in school food drives. Fish and meat from your freezer are also often needed and deeply appreciated donations at our local food pantries!

  • Volunteer: Many food banks and pantries rely on volunteers to help sort food, pack boxes, or distribute meals. Volunteering is a great way to support your community and make a tangible difference.

  • Gain & Raise Awareness: Discuss Hunger Awareness Month with your family, friends, and classmates. Raising awareness helps spread the word and encourages more people to get involved. Take some time to explore MAZON’s Hunger Museum and share what you learn with others. Ask your local candidates running for office about their understanding of hunger facing your community, and share with them what you’ve learned. Understanding the issue is a key step toward solving it.

Moving Forward

September is a month to reflect on the issue of hunger and take action to help those in need. Whether you choose to donate, volunteer, or simply learn more about hunger, your efforts will make a meaningful difference. As we observe Hunger Awareness Month, let’s work together to ensure that all Alaskans can access the food they need.
