Congressional Updates
The Farm Bill starts as separate bills in both the Senate and House Agriculture Committees. The members on those committees have a tremendous opportunity to shape the direction of the legislation (note: AK doesn’t have any representation in either committee). Once their respective bills pass the Committee, they go to the Floor for all members to consider, debate, amend, and vote on. Since the two versions will be different, leaders from both bodies form a ‘conference committee’ to agree upon a single bill, combining elements of each. The conference committee bill is then sent back to both the House Floor and the Senate Floor for a final vote. After passing both bodies, the bill is sent to the White House for the President’s signing into law.
